The veil comes down and hell doesn't break loose. You'd assume it would what with who was on the other side. But, dispatching the sudden wave of tomb vampires isn't difficult when they're almost all vampires, anyway, and Kol would rather skip town and find his family which is fine for everyone involved. Alaric for his part sees that everything is pretty much -- okay. Jeremy's a mess but in this mature way where he realizes how he can help everyone. Bonnie's death hits everyone. Unlike gross canon, it's acknowledged and she is mourned. Elena's a vampire. It's been too long and Meredith Fell is dating another old flame from high school which is hardly surprising. There's also her pact with her family to never date a vampire.
He understands.
Damon and Alaric decide to take a weekend away. Damon has business in northern California and Alaric doesn't ask questions. He stands in the doorway, waiting for his and Elena's display of affection to end ("I'm right here,") before taking off. They leave the car at the airport. Damon will compel away price per day when they get back.
In Beacon Hills, because apparently, that's a town name, Alaric has no problem splitting off from Damon. Again, he has business and Alaric has learned better than to question that business. Besides, Alaric isn't in a place to question it.
It's the night of the full moon when Alaric gets a familiar itch. Maybe it's the height of the moon in the sky, or the howl he swears he hears but Alaric finds himself in the woods outside of their motel. He has various contraptions at the ready as old habits really do die hard. He hears something break in half, perhaps a stick, as footsteps echo -- behind him? He's not an expert at vampire hearing yet. In many ways, he's a fucking baby vampire thanks to being dead for months. But, he's not useless. He's very capable. He spots a figure up ahead, hand grasping a nearby tree. Is she bracing herself? She looks - well, conflicted is an understatement.

"Hey. You okay?"
