For his part, Damon has experienced werewolf bites twice in Mystic Falls. Once with Rose and once himself. He can recognize the signs. He'd have to care in some way, shape, or form to offer any help.

So, when he leaves the Mystic Grill (Matt Donovan cut him off. Matt Donovan) he decides to take the long way home. Or, more like, he decides to walk it off before driving back to the boarding house. He also decides to drop by the Gilbert house but he assumes that might not go too well.

So, when he sees Rebekah pressing into a nearby wall, well, he doesn't care. It's weird, too, and it reminds him way too much of a crazy girl in New Orleans who is probably still counting bricks. Except Rebekah has less of a dazed look on her face. It's more... manic.

"You get points for dramatics, but I'll only call you Angelina if I get to be Winona." Because poking the Original bear was the best decision he could make.
