When she calls him to tell him she's heading home the conversation is short and clipped. Being back in Mystic Falls, chasing after the cure only to have Silas steal it from her in the end -- it hasn't been easy on her. Her brothers are moving onto New Orleans and Elijah's all but begged her to come with --

But she won't. Not now. She has a home now. It's part of why she had fought so hard for the cure, the idea that someday, when he was off the anklet, she and Neal could settle down and have a real life. Get married, have children, all the sorts of thing she ever dreamed of.

But things don't work out that way and the sorrow of that loss leaves with a lack of things to say, her words lack the usual wit and sharpness they usually carry, even she knows that.

It's a few days later that she's back in New York, making her way back into the apartment. It's been weeks since she left after the announcement of Kol's death.

"Neal?"

She has no idea if he's home or working with Peter or doing something with Mozzie or what. She hopes he's home.

Neal is in the back closet preparing for a case when he hears the sound of her voice. Her phone call has come on the heels of better and better news for Neal. Things are starting to fall into place with regards to Ellen's case, and with the arrival of her CI things are looking up.

The fact that Rebekah is coming home, unharmed? Even better.

He's half dressed when he makes his way out, pulling a polo shirt over his head as he greats her with a smile. "You're back."

At least someone's having good news. She's glad things are falling into place with him for Ellen's case. That's something.

Still, as lousy as her own mood has been the whole trip back it's hard not to smile a little as he makes his way out. She doesn't waste time before heading over to him, wrapping her arms tightly (but not too tightly) around his waist.

"I am."

He returns the hug just as tightly, letting her lean into him as she does. Even with the smile he can tell that things didn't go as she had hoped, but she's here. They can figure out the rest later.

"I take it things could have gone better?"

"I got close to getting it. The cure. But there was only one dose."

And the odds didn't work out in her favor. They almost never do. But at least she had him to come home to -- it's something.

His face falls a bit. He knows how much she wanted the chance to be human again. "I'm sorry it didn't work out."

"So am I." She had gotten so close in the end too, but Silas stole it away from her. There's nothing to be done about it now.

Excatly. So there's no point in dwelling on it for the evening. Now was the time figure out what to do to welcome her back home.

"I'm just happy you're home," he says with a smile, before leaning in to kiss her softly. "I missed having you here."

She leans up to kiss him back. There is at least this, that she had this to come home, she didn't end up with nothing at all this time. She still had him.

"I've missed being here."

"So what would you like to do, now that you're back here? Dinner? Dancing?" Steal something? Not that there's much in a two mile radius he can steal, but it could be fun.

"Something exciting." So maybe stealing. Not maybe the best of ideas, but it'd be a nice distraction.

He nods a bit at that. "I have to go meet Peter for something for a case, but why don't you meet me at that lounge you like later. We'll see where the night takes us."

Stealing something could totally still be on the table.

She nods a little in agreement. "That sounds like a good plan."

It'll give her sometime to get ready first and then well -- whatever happens happens. If that ends up including stealing?

So be it.

He smiles as he leans in to kiss her again, trying to convey just how glad he is that she's home. As far as he's concerned, this can always be home for her, and it feels better when she's in it.

She leans in, letting her eyes close as she kisses him back. Even just being here with him eases the pain of what she's lost, if only just a little.

This is her home now, she doesn't plan on leaving again.

He holds the kiss for as long as he can before he breaks it, pulling back to look at her with a smile. "I'll let you settle back in, and I'll call you when I'm leaving the office."

"I'll be looking forward to it." At least it'll be a pleasant distraction, whatever trouble they end up getting themselves into.

He'll give her hand one last squeeze, before turning and heading towards the door. "I'll see you soon."

She smiles. "I'll see you then."

And with that, he turns to head off to work.
