OPEN SHIP WITH ME POST

I'm in a very shippy mood and mostly on top of my tags right now so I thought instead of combing through memes I'd leave this as an open post.

Basically leave me prompts: quotes, pictures, song lyrics, whatever with a muse and what muse of mine you want and we'll see what happens. Alternately, if you don't request a specific muse you can leave it up to me to choose who i throw at them.

I make no apologies for the choices made when that happens.

So please, come and enjoy all the ships with me!!

She shakes her head a little. "No, not really." The only art she ever really saw when she was human tended to be of the religious variety.

Never let it be said that Neal is one to pass up a learning experience - at least when it's for someone else. "For the most part, art is easy. It's all about how it makes you feel. All the stuff about brushstrokes and all of that is just people getting technical - all you have to do to appreciate art is to let it speak to you."

She smiles at that -- because that sounds much more simple than she ever would of thought.

"It's that easy?"

"That easy." He gives her a small smile before taking her hand gently and leading her over to one of the other wings of the museum. "Most of these are from the Baroque period, so it's a lot of portraits and religious scenes, but that doesn't mean that there isn't something to them. That's what makes the artists great."

"I recognized some of the more religious ones -- or what scenes they were 'sposed to be anyway." That much she knows, her parents had been extremely religious, after all.

He nods a bit at that. "But even people who choose the same scene can do it in different ways. Especially depending on if it was painted by a man or a woman. There weren't a lot of female Baroque painters, but some of them did really ... impressive, daring work."

He pauses, before stopping in front of a self-portrait of Artemisia Gentileschi. "She's personally one of my favorites. She was never afraid to paint things as they were rather than the prettier picture that everyone wanted to see."

She pauses in front of the painting he's led her towards. She tilts her head taking in the image.

"That was very brave of her -- I'm sure not everyone appreciated her doing so."

"No, they didn't. She was criticized her entire life for it." He eyes some of the pieces available for the moment, before glancing back to her. "Do you know the story of Susanna, from the Book of Daniel?"

Jessica nods a little. "I do. She was blackmailed and falsely accused of bein' a promiscuous woman. Almost got stoned to death."

[personal profile] alias_savant 2015-01-26 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
He nods again. "Most of the artists at the time, portrayed Susanna as demure, complacent, not really fighting or trying to get away from the men who were attacking her. But Gentileschi, decided to take a different approach." He comes to a stop in front of her particular interpretation. "She wanted you to feel uncomfortable, and unsettled, just the way Susanna would have - forced to witness the unjustice done to her but unable to do anything to stop it. It's also said that it was meant to pass judgement on the justice system of the time, who did fairly little for women who were in similar situations, including herself. She had no voice in any real court of law, so she used her art to give her one instead."

Jessica stops in front of the painting to give it a good look over. Though she's seen more religious art than anything else this isn't the sort of thing her parents ever would have shown her. It's striking, moving even to say the least. She digests his words for a moment before speaking.

"That's mighty brave of her. I can't imagine people responded well to it."

"They didn't," he shakes his head. "But she didn't stop. She was probably one of the bravest women of her time. It's a shame no one really talks about her now."

"Well, I'm glad I'm talkin' to you then so I can learn more about her."

"I'm glad to help." He never minds talking about art, after all. "I can probably talk about a few more of these, if you like?"

Her smiles widens and she nods eagerly. "I'd like that."

He nods in agreement, before they step away and head off to see the rest of the exhibit.
