Even though Caroline tells him he's "free" it doesn't feel like it. It's still on Klaus' terms. His decisions. So he stays away. He networks with other wolves, he tries to make a plan. He wants Klaus to suffer the way he has. He only comes home for Bonnie's funeral -- she's been his friend his whole life, he can't miss that. But his decision to continue to go after Klaus is the straw that breaks both their backs and he and Caroline break up.

It's fine. He's made his choice. He can't just go back to his life and pretend like nothing happened. Like his pack isn't dead. Like his mother isn't dead. Klaus still has power over him. He's always going to. This freedom is conditional. He can't live like that, on Klaus' terms.

Which is why he's set up camping in the bayou to try to figure out a plan when he sniffs the air, scenting a familiar wolf.

"Cora?"

Cora received a voice mail during the last full moon about a suspicious wolf that was lurking around the bayou - not just a wolf, a hybrid - and she knows in an instant who it is. While the Hales may not have had strong connections in New Orleans - the Labonairs were too hot-headed, too fraught for control - Cora was able to find some space to hide with the untriggered members of their pack after the fire.

She doesn't have to call back and find out who the hybrid is. She knows enough about what's going on in New Orleans right now to know that there's only one real possibility.

She sighs as she steps out of the trees, arms crossed in front of her chest as she stares him down, clearly not happy with his current location. "What the hell are you doing?"

"At the moment? Nothing yet."

Which is probably not the answer she's looking for. He's mostly just been gathering information, keeping his ears open to find a strategy that would work to go after Klaus.

No, it's really not. She rolls her eyes at that before making her way closer to sit next to him. It's not that she's not happy to see him - she is. She'd just prefer he not get himself killed in the process.

"Really? Because I heard through the grapevine you were preparing to make a run at Klaus."

[lockwood]

"And what if i was? The bastard more than deserves it. He's taken everything from me."

And Tyler can't see a version of his life where Klaus doesn't have the upper hand, it drives him crazy.

"Deserves it, maybe. But there is such a thing as a suicide mission and right now you are on it. You can't run hard at a guy like Klaus, you gotta run smart."

It's a lesson Cora's learned the hard way, time and again, constantly railing at people that are more powerful than she is. Because when someone knocks you down after every plan you try, you can't keep going at him the same way. You need to take a step back and try something different.
